Every day Master Zuigan used to call to himself, “Master!” and would answer, “Yes!”

Again, he would call, “Thoroughly awake! Thoroughly awake!” and he would reply, “Yes! Yes!”

Then he would say, “Don’t be deceived by others, any day or any time.”

“No! No!” he would respond.

I have a few comments on this Koan. This is how Zuigan would converse with his Essential Nature. He recognized the discovery of Essential Nature is a patchy, non-linear, unfolding process, with starts, advances, and setbacks. In time we acquire faith and belief in the process, which is based on and justified by our own direct and deepening experience.
